HELP
Welcome to your new Member Sponsored Lok.Mail account provided by Name.Space!
Here is how to get started:
1. Go to your PGP Keyring:
Click on "PGP Keys" on the menu bar to the left
2. Generate new Public/Private keypair:
Click the option "Generate a new PGP key pair"
Fill out your Name,
email address (i.e. yourname@lokmail.com)
Type in a passphrase--should be a sentence or sequence
of words, with a minimum of 15 characters, something
memorable, but spelled interestingly to prevent anyone
from guessing, i.e. MarYH@daLiTtl3LamB (Mary had a little lamb)
the passphrase is case sensitive, and accepts spaces
as well.
Note: The purpose for having a different passphrase from your
login password is so that if anyone guesses your login,
they still can't get to your encrypted mail, or use your
encryption keys to masquerade as you. This is an extra
layer of security.
3. Click "Generate Key" (leave the default DSA key selected)
Set your default Private Key:
once your key is generated, the PGP Keyring page will
appear. Next to your key is "sec" for your secret key.
Click on the "sec" to set your default encryption/signing
key. A red * should appear next to "sec".
4. Exchange Public Keys:
To communicate securely with others who use LokMail or PGP at home,
you must exchange public keys with others with whom you wish
to communicate securely.
To send your key from LokMail:
Go to PGP Keys by clicking on the link in the navigation bar to the left.
Select your key from the keyring:
click on your name/email address to display your key. A page will appear
with your key in a window.
Below your key is a form that says "send (only public key) to
someone else".
Type in the email addresses of those to whom you wish to send the
key (i.e. othername@lokmail.com) separated by commas (,) and click
"Send Key".
5. Once you have sent your public key to each person (who uses Lok.Mail,
or who also has PGP on their own computer) with whom you wish to exchange
encrypted email with, be sure to collect public keys from others.
6. Add a public key to your keyring:
LokMail sends keys as attatchments to email messages. To add
a key to your keyring, open the message with the pgp key attatchment.
You will see a link, "application/pgp-keys - attachment" click on
that link to display the attatched file. When the next page appears,
click on the link that says "add to keyring" Repeat this step for any
other public keys that arrive in your inbox.
7. Send an Encrypted and Signed message:
Click on "compose" in the menu bar to the left to compose a new
message.
Fill out the recipient's email address in the to: field,
put a subject in the subject: field, and then write your
message in the message window.
When you have completed your message, select "encrypt and sign
message with PGP" and click on "send message now" (the default setting
is "Sign with ASCII armor attatchments" which digitally signs the message
without encrypting it).
Select the Public Keys of recipient(s):
A page will appear with your public and private keyrings, automatically
selecting the keys of recipients designated in the message. If the public
keys of the recipients are not selected, hold the shift key (command key on
mac) to select (multple) key(s). You may send to multiple recipients by
encrypting to several public keys at once, for each person the message is
intended for.
Select your Private Key:
Your private key(s) appear in the lower key window. Your default key
should be highlighted (if you only have one, it should be highlighted),
if not, click on it to select it.
Type your PGP passphrase (the long one, not your login password!) and
click "proceed" The message will then be encrypted and sent.
If for any reason the key selection or encryption fails, DO NOT click
the "back" button on your browser--DO click the "go back and edit message"
button to return to the compose message page (or you will lose your
message!).
TIP: If you wish to send several encrypted messages, or read several encrypted
messages without typing in your passphrase each time, go to PGP keys and
type your passphrase in the box and click "Cache Passphrase"
This will remember your passphrase to encrypt and decrypt messages
for your session, as long as you are logged in, or until your reverse
the operation by clicking the link on the PGP keys page to uncache
your passphrase. BE SURE TO LOGOUT AND QUIT YOUR BROWSER AT THE END
OF YOUR SESSION, ESPECIALLY IF YOU CACHE YOUR PASSPHRASE!
Send message "in the clear" and with Digital Signature:
You may also send messages without encrypting them by selecting the
option "Do not encrypt or sign with PGP" and you may also sign the
message with your digital signature without encrypting the message itself
by choosing "Sign message, use ASCII armor attatchments"
You may choose which mode your mail account defaults to in the preferences
section, accessed by clicking on the "Preferences" link in the navigation bar
to the left.
